The Ewen Stewart Inspirational Runner award goes to a deserving winner, Shanise MacDonald.
Shanise always says, “If I can do it, anyone can.” She started running a few years ago and since has worked her way up to completing so many distances, from 5km’s to Full Marathons.
Shanise wanted to run 30 races before her 30th birthday. The week of her 29th race, she broke her ankle. She was devastated that she wouldn’t be able to complete her challenge, but she didn’t let her broken ankle stop her. Shanise did that race, a 7k course in a wheelchair, with just a little help from one of her sisters to push her along the way. Then in December, she finished her 30th race in a walking cast. Nothing slows her down and she doesn’t let anything hold her back. Although she finished many races in last place, she went the distance and inspired many people along the way.
One of her sister’s was inspired by her. Shanise helped her train for her first half marathon. Shanise even slowed her pace down so that she could run and finish the half with her sister. She travels all over the Island, and the Maritimes to run with her sisters. They have been known to dress up in crazy costumes to make it even more fun. In October, 2015, Shanise and her sisters, along with their mother, each completed a different event in the PEI Marathon.
Shanise is an inspiration to all her family and her friends too.
Once again, congratulations from all of us and the Island Marathon sponsor for being this year’s recipient of the Inspirational award.
