As always happens, we had many excellent rookie RoadRunners this year, but we think you will all agree with our choice.

Rebecca Pike (or Becca) is the 2009 winner of the Cox & Palmer Rookie of the Year Award.

Becca moved to the Island just a little over a year ago to pursue her Ph.D. at the Vet College.  As she has done with all her other stops, she got involved in the community.  In addition to her studies, Becca became a regular in her church, singing and playing the flute with the choir.

She also became a regular as a PEI RoadRunner.  Becca participated in at least 25 runs in her rookie season.  Her results were impressive.  She won 13 of the 25 races, and was in the top three females in 9 more of those races.

Becca really  was a rookie when it came to the longer runs, and her enthusiasm for trying longer and longer runs was infectious.  She ran her first Half at the Fulton Campbell in 1:37, then her first 25K in the grueling Harvest Festival, finishing in less than 2 hours at 1:57.  Becca also trained for her first marathon with Stan’s group. Her enthusiasm for the long Sunday morning training runs rubbed off on the veteran runners training with her.  Becca ran her first marathon in the PEI Marathon in an impressive time of 3:31, qualifying her for Boston in her first attempt.  Becca was the 5th female in the PEI Marathon.

Becca had impressive times in the shorter races.  She had a sub-41 minute 10K at the Rural Raider Run, and a sub-20 minute %K at the Deltaware run. Her overall efforts resulted in her winning of the ADL/Sport PEI Senior Female Achievement Award earlier tonight.

Becca’s enthusiasm continued after the race season ended. She has been organizing the regular Tuesday evening runs from UPEI, helping to keep runners active and motivated through the long winter months.

Becca, we are very pleased to present you with the Cox & Palmer PEI RoadRunners Rookie of the Year Award.

You had an incredible year!!

Congratulations Becca!
