Kent Mill

(Photo  by Janet Norman-Bain)

This neophyte to the PEI Roadrunners comes with more endorsements for the PEI Inspirational Roadrunner of the Year than I have sisters! Endorsements from Tammy, Megan, Joy, Angela, Lana, Maria, Amber, Wendy, Susan, Tonya, Kim and ....last but not least Derek! No it is  not Julio Englesis!

Kent Mill  began running about five years ago at a time when he had
decided to make an overall lifestyle change in order to improve his health and well being. He was overcoming back surgery and struggling with persistent headaches and stress from changes he was experiencing with his vision.  Kent has vision in one eye only and when he began to have difficulty with that eye, the potential for
serious impacts on his life became apparent.

Kent had been a smoker in the past and his endurance wasn't the greatest.   Due to the damage to his eyes, he is limited in his choices for sports that he can participate in and running seemed to fit the bill. Certainly, his goals for running were admirable: he wanted to improve his health and to do so in a manner that he would find enjoyable and challenging at the same time.

Like so many of us bitten by the running  bug, Kent began researching and found a program to follow that would help him progress from being a leisurely dog walker to… a runner.  He  shares his progress over time with his supportive wife Joy and his family and friends. The treadmill purchase , let's just say, has not become a clothes hanger!

His health did improve.  Along with the changes he has undertaken in his diet, his running makes him feel better with less stress and almost non-existent headaches.  He's even lost a little weight.  He feels more energized and loves sharing new learnings  about the current running magazine or book he's reading or about improvements in his running times.

He has always liked outdoor activities and this is one where he gets to
enjoy the scenery and forget about the busyness of everyday life.   Even when he comes home sore after a long run, his focus is not on the pain but on what he needs to do so that the pain or injury will not interfere with the next run.  Since beginning, he has participated twice in the PEI Marathon, twice in the Fredericton Marathon, once in the Blue Nose Marathon, and in several shorter distance races.  Running has led to him meeting many interesting people in the Maritimes and offers an avenue for socializing, being outdoors, competing, and improving his
health.  He has recently joined TEAM PEI to run the Cabot Trail Relay Race.

It's obvious that he's hooked.  Samples of the many endorsements:
"Cuz he's the best." "For his perseverance and good attitude in the face of difficulties" "Great determination and never gives up" "Hard worker , nice guy, he deserves to win"

The PEI Roadrunners think you deserve this as well Kent!

Congratulations Kent!
