The 2008 Sporting Intentions Male RoadRunner of the Year is awarded to Leo McCosham.
Training, racing and improvement:
Our male winner tonight is another multi-sport athlete. Leo was a very successful arm wrestler in his earlier days, and is now having equal success running the roads. Those who have watched Leo have seen him transform his physique from a bulky arm wrestler to a lean mean running machine. Even as he began running, Leo always had very respectable times, but with his dedication to training he has become one of our elite runners, posting the 10th fasted marathon time for his age group in this region this year … with his 2:46:59 finish in the PEI Marathon (Source: MarathonCanada.com).
Leo participated in at least 14 other PEI RoadRunner races, with two wins in the St. Patrick’s Day run and the Fall Frolic, one second place finish in the Cox & Palmer 10K, and 6 third place finishes.
However, one of the main reasons why Leo is our winner tonight is that he saved some of his best races for when he was representing the Club, and the Island, at off Island events. Leo had an impressive 2:55 in the Boston Marathon in April. Later in the season, Leo won his first marathon at the Marathon-by-the-Sea in Saint John in September in a time of 2:51. He followed that up with another win in the Legs for Literacy Marathon in Moncton in a time of 2:57 in November. Oh, and by the way, in between just happened to be a 4th place finish in the PEI Marathon in October. NOT BAD for a three month span!!

Assistance with Club Activities:
If Leo is resting up a big run, or recovering from a slight injury, he still turns out to our races to lend a hand to the race director … willing to do whatever is asked of him.
Interest in Running and Helping Beginners:
For someone who has only been running for a few years, Leo has a great depth of knowledge about the sport. Many runners who have been running much longer seek … and listen to … Leo’s advice … which he freely shares with all who ask. Once the race is over, Leo is laid back, personable and always encouraging others.
Always gives his Best:
But have no doubt, Leo has a competitive streak and always gives his best! He likes the challenge that other runners provide in a close race, especially if that challenge is coming from his brother Mark. Recently, the two were competing in a double loop half-marathon. Mark didn’t tell Leo he was only doing 10K and would be running at his 10K pace. Without knowing this info, Leo was forced to keep up with his brother. It didn’t faze him …it just helped him record a 1:20 half-marathon, finishing 6 minutes ahead of the second place runner.
Without a doubt, Leo is one of our elite runners …a fine example of a PEI RoadRunner … and a deserving winner of the 2008 Sporting Intentions Male RoadRunner of the Year.
Congratulations Leo!
